Kirtsy Takes a Bow

Today it starts. Today people will hold the book in their hands and read it for the first time. It's pretty exciting. But the truth is, I have no perspective on this book. At all. I've read it too many times, in too many iterations. I've scoured it when it had 0 design and held 802 individual entries. Then 425 pieces. Then 315. Then 207. Then 152. Over the last year, as the design grew, as the book shaped, it became what people will read tonight and all this week. This crazy, crazy week that starts in Houston, then moves to DC, then to Dallas, then to ...

Ordinary Courage —
I started the Inspiration Interview Series because I wanted to know more about the people who share their work with the world and inspire me to practice courage, be creative, and dream big. Laura Mayes is one of those people!
Meet Laura!

Laura spent several years as an ad agengy VP, where she wrote for a variety of Fortune 500 companies and metaphoric rock stars.
She is one of the founders of Kirtsy - a social media platform of pure goodness. A site for women, run by women, and about women! Her partners in crime ...

Surrender, Dorothy —
Once upon a time, I met a woman named Laura Mayes who shared my views on writing and publishing. I immediately liked her. She was cheerful and upbeat and ambitious and persistent. And today, she has a gorgeous, high-design book filled with wonderful writing and photography called Kirtsy Takes a ...

It's a big week, friends. So big that all I want to do is blog about the bigness. And so big that I am finding it hard to squeeze in blogging time. Which is just how it goes, isn't it? In this post I'll just cover 2 of the big things. ...
Kirtsy takes a bow. Book day!

I am so flipping over the moon to have a piece in the new Kirtsy book, “Kirtsy Takes a Bow – A Celebration of Women’s Favorites Online” that I have been floating around all day. I am more than honored to be included with all of these amazing women. It spins my mind. I remember the beautiful face of Laura Mayes when she told me about the project two summers ago in San Fran. She and all the Kirtsy girls have become really wonderful friends to me. I hold them close to me. And all of these women and these voices- it's pretty amazing. Another gal to think about today is Katherine Center- my dreamy novelist ...

Have you seen the Kirtsy book? Well run out and find one now, because it’s beautiful and inspiring and uplifting and … well, and fabulous. Of course.
And also because I’m in it! Hooray!
I’m a little overwrought this week, for a bunch of complicated reasons, but this morning, when I saw the live site for the book and watched Katherine Center’s beautiful trailer, I got all teary, like had to go find a box of tissues teary, because I am so proud to be part of this book, of this whole idea. The voices in this book are remarkable and powerful and beautiful ...
The New Kirtsy Book’s Here! The New Kirtsy Book’s Here!

Today, I feel like Steve Martin in the movie, The Jerk. No, I’m not feeling like a jerk. Remember the scene when the new phone book arrives? The mere fact of seeing his name in print brings out a joyous rant: — “The new phone book’s here! The new phone book’s here! I’m SOMEBODY!”
Something is here that is SO much better than the phone book!
The new Kirtsy book’s here! The new Kirtsy book’s here!
Obviously, I have a little more self-confidence than Steve Martin’s ...

I have a little load of delicates in this just-published book. I haven't seen the book yet, but I'm posting this promotional video for it to make it easier for me to view another 2,000 times: The book is one thing, but the really interesting thing (to me) is that the editor, Kirtsy co-founder and social media maven Laura Mayes, was once a co-worker of mine. Actually, I was her dictatorial but charmingly benevolent boss back when I was a woman of substance. That our lives have intersected again is something far more interesting than anything of ...

Laundry for Six —
Do you remember the smell? The smell of a brand new fancy book? Not a cheap paperback, but a glossy, color-filled, coffee-table worthy book? A mix of paper, ink and glue. On our way out the door to church last week, I grabbed a handful of kids' books from the bookshelf in the living room. I tried to find ones we hadn't read recently so they would be SURE to hold their attention. One of them was a really nice hardback picture book that came from a used book sale. When Shout opened it up duing the service, both girls immediately wrinkled up their noses. "What's ...
