Motrinmoms: Demonstration of Social Media's Power or Overblown Drama?
Published 11/17/2008 at Type-A Mom Feed
The blogosphere's reach is no longer limited to blogs and email forwards. The speed at which bad PR can move is astounding with the reach of social media tools. Motrin is standing center stage with what can happen when a new campaign doesn't go as planned. The blogosphere's reach is no longer limited to blogs and email forwards. The speed at which bad PR can move is astounding with the ever growing social media toolkit. Motrin is currently learning what can happen when new campaign doesn't receive its expected reaction. Snark is fun and snark is cool, but improperly executed, a snarky tone can cause quite a headache. Over the weekend Motrin released a ...
Motrin Ad Triggers Outrage

Motrin Ad Triggers Outrage 11.18.08 Online moms all a Twitter about drugmaker's web commercial So what did we learn this weekend? Don't make moms mad, according to one PR expert . Motrin posted a video ad on its website advertising the over-the-counter pain reliever as a cure for the pain that moms experience when they carry their babies in slings, also known as "baby wearing." However, online moms were offended by the suggestion that they carry their babies to be "fashionable," The New York Times reports. Some saw the narrator's tone as snarky and the wording as griping about the social pressure to "wear" your baby. The line ...
Motrin Marketing Gone Awry: Baby Wearing On Attack
Published 11/17/2008 by Lisa Mulcahy at droolicious
I’m going to buck the format a bit for this post, but since the topic is baby wearing products I figured Droolicious readers would be just as outraged as I was when I saw this ridiculous commercial from Motrin. See video link after the jump.
I mean really, did Motrin do any market research before deciding this was a brilliant way to “target” new moms? Based on the backlash that’s going on, I’m guessing whatever ad firm came up with this campaign is being used for target practice of another kind as we speak.
As a baby-wearing mom I think it’s ...
Discuss: Motrin’s Mommy Ad
Published 11/18/2008 by Buz at Thingamababy
Is this a great ad, or the greatest ad, you’ve ever seen for a pain reliever?
Here are backup copies of the same ad: one, two.
Oh, but I jest. Here’s the full text in case the video becomes unavailable. The ad was pulled from Motrin’s website, but magazine ads have already been published. The bolding is my own emphasis.
Wearing your baby seems to be in fashion. I mean, in theory it’s a great idea. There’s the front baby carrier, the sling, the shwing, the wrap, ...
Hell hath no fury like a mommy blogger scorned
Published 11/18/2008 at Childs Play x2 - A dad and his twins
After almost five years of blogging, I have lots of mommy blogging friends. In fact, I think I might even be an honorary mommy blogger based on all of the emails I get from marketers that begin by saying, “Hi, Mommy!” At any rate, I have a lot of love for the mommy blogging community. They all love their children, love parenting, in spite of it’s many challenges, and smell really nice. Actually, I don’t know about that last one but I like to think it’s true. Another thing about the mommy blogging community: They can mobilize like nobody’s business. The pain reliever, Motrin ...
Motherhood is a pain

I apparently was living under rock this weekend when a firestorm of Moms Who Twitter attacked Motrin and their latest ad campaign about motherhood. Or more specifically about how "baby wearing" is pain in the... back.
If you were also living under a rock, you can watch the ad on YouTube. Thank heavens for YouTube - Motrin has already pulled the ad online.
I've watched the ad a couple of times now. And for the most part, I get the sarcastic tone of ad. Sort of reminds me of the weird VW commercials with Brooke Shields. Alright, I'll agree that it makes ...
Were You Offended by the Motrin Moms Ad?

Earlier this week, Motrin removed its controversial moms' advertising campaign after tech-savvy mamas created an online uproar over the campaign's tongue-in-cheek positioning of babies as fashion accessories. Did you find the ad insensitive to mothers? ...

This past weekend, Motrin – a well trusted household brand came under the attack of one of the most talked about groups in the world of advertising and marketing today; the mom bloggers.
The odd thing about this story was that the catalyst was not a danger to children but instead the tone of an online ad. In trying to reach out and relate to young moms, it alienated them. It was initially viewed as condescending and insulting. The discussion surrounded baby wearing, the use of a carrier to hold your child. The concept is to keep the baby close to you while ...
New Motrin Commercial Upsets Baby Wearing Moms
Published 11/20/2008 by Future Mom (Heather) (noreply@blogger.com) at New Mommy Rant
Last weekend, Johnson & Johnson posted an online commercial for Motrin. They were trying to say that this pain reliever will help you get rid of the pain you get from baby wearing. The narrator describes babywearing by saying that "supposedly it's a real bonding experience" and describes that baby wearing is the new hip thing to do. She also says that babywearing makes you look like an "official mom". Many moms agreed that this ad was offensive & it was removed. A rep for Johnson & Johnson (who is a mother herself) has issued an apology for the ad, saying that they did not mean to offend moms through their ...

Part two of My First Frenemy is coming soon, I PROMISE. Really, really soon. And the ending is definitely worth waiting for. However, I needed to tell you about something first that, like the dastardly Motrin ad, is affecting millions of moms here and maybe even in Russia and basically ruining their lives. Wait. Do you all of you know about the Motrin ad? Here it is. Motrin recently posted the ad on its website and set off a firestorm of controversy among the Mommies of the Internetz, who Twittered about it in droves and posted videos on YouTube, saying, essentially, MOTRIN U R TOTALLY SUCK. Look Deeper

Sometimes I have a hard time, as many of us do, looking deeper. We tend to believe what we do without consequence. We fight wars within our homes and ourselves, often oblivious to whom and what we are fighting. We jump on bandwagons because we are told to by the media, our friends, respected individuals. But we seldom look deeper. Ask questions. About the people and things we curse and hate and disagree with. About the industries who have "screwed us over" or "brought on their own demise." ...
